Merry Christmas!

Everyone knows how hard it can be to get a good picture of little ones on Christmas because they are always on the go! Isaac loved the brightly wrapped packages with their ribbons and bows. We celebrated on Christmas Eve because Dad has to work today and by the time he gets home Zoe has to go spend Christmas with her Mom. I've never celebrated early, but it was nice. As everyone warned us Isaac's favorite "gifts" were the boxes his toys came in and the wrapping paper. He was very excited about the airplane that he opened up as his first gift, it's the same one he got to play with while in the hospital and he really likes it.

At our post-op appointment on December 23rd we got the all clear to give Isaac soft foods like the stage 2 baby foods. At first he wasn't too excited about it, but yesterday he ate six containers and several sippy cups of formula. Poor little man, he loves to eat and feed himself and we can't wait until he gets the all clear. The doctor said that things are progressing very nicely and to keep up with the no-nos and restricted diet until we visit on January 7th.

How do you teach a child his name? When we went to the ENT Isaac had hearing test with the audiologist and we discovered that his hearing was pretty bad. She said it was like he was hearing everything underwater because he had so much fluid in his ears. The doctors said that we would notice a dramatic change once he got his tubes on the 15th when he had his palate surgery. I have noticed that his walking improved dramatically even when he had wires attached to his one foot, so maybe it helped improve his balance. He started spinning in circles with his arms out yesterday like little kids have the habit of doing. We call his name but he doesn't respond. He will look when we're talking or when he hears other sounds, but doesn't seem to respond to his name. Very odd. I guess no child has ever started school not knowing their name and it will come in time.

Surgery & Recovery Update

Well, all I can say is that it has been a very long six days! I had found a computer in the waiting room near Isaac's room in the hospital, but posting on blogger was blocked. Then when I got home and had full access to a computer I have been too tired to get online for longer than a minute here or there to catch up on e-mail or find answers to my post-surgery questions. Dr. Ruiz said that Isaac did better than excellent in surgery and that things are going well. This first picture is in the pre-op area where we waited for about 90 minutes before Isaac went back for surgery. They gave him a cute little teddy bear (hiding behind the drum) and a beautiful quilt with whales on it (behind Isaac) when we were checked into our room. The quilt was made by a lady in Christmas, Florida who makes them to donate to the children in the hospital. It was so nice and made us feel special.

As if the waiting during surgery wasn't excruciating enough we had to wait for a very long time to see Isaac after he came out of recovery. It took him over an hour to come out of the anesthesia well enough for him to be moved into his room. As they wheeled him around the corner he reached for me, but I couldn't hold him until we were in our room. It was so hard to see his little face all swollen up and his little body hooked up to IVs and monitors. He loved to be held and still mainly wants to be snuggled as he recovers.
Kids must be pretty resilient because the next day he wanted to play with toys. The people from the play room came and brought Isaac a few toys to play with. He really loved the airplane and we are trying to find one to give him for Christmas. Still swollen, but starting to look more normal.
Who doesn't just love Pluto!? Isaac was so excited to have a visit from Pluto. By Wednesday we were SO READY to leave the hospital and our wonderful nurse Norma let us out to go for a ride in the wagon to visit the playroom. While we were there Pluto came to the hospital to visit the kids. Isaac was so excited and hugged him and pulled in his whiskers. I was so shocked that he was willing to visit Pluto. They also gave him the softest little tiger that we have affectionately named Arnold after the hospital.
Well I have to run, he's starting to wake up and it's time for the next round of meds. Please continue to pray for our little guy. Next time I'll try to post about how our little Houdini tries to escape from his no-nos.

Just a Couple More Hours

When you see this picture remember to pray that Isaac will do well in his surgery and recovery, and to keep things out of his mouth. I am a nervous wreck, we need to be at the hospital by 6 o'clock am and he is scheduled for surgery at 7:30. We're down for the night and can't have any more formula to drink after 12:00 or anything to drink after 2:00. I hope that he isn't too cranky in the morning when we can't feed him breakfast. Hopefully he will go back to sleep since it's way before he usually wakes up. Please pray that Mommy & Daddy will be calm and able to reassure our little man, and that Isaac will keep his little fingers and toys out of his mouth. Mostly we pray that God will help prepare his mind so that he can not be so scared when he wakes up at the hospital and when the doctors and nurses are all around. I'm sure I'll feel better tomorrow. I hope that I will be able to get some sleep tonight.

4 more days

Only four more days until Isaac has surgery to correct his cleft palate. We will meet with his surgeon today to find out the specifics concerning his surgery. I hope that it is early in the day on Monday because I don't think my heart could take not giving him food as we waited to go in. Please pray Isaac will do well with his recovery. He just loves to put things into his mouth, hands, toys, whatever... and I am worried that he is going to have a difficult time. They have little arm restraints ("no-nos") but I can't imagine having to leave them on until he recovers. He is so quick with a thumb or a toy I just don't know how we can keep them out of his mouth. When he first joined our family on October 13th he only wanted to drink his bottle or eat very soft foods. In the past eight weeks this little guy has developed a taste for everything and anything. I worry about his restricted diet, but know that it is the best thing for his recovery and plan on following doctor's orders to the letter! I'll be home with him until after Christmas vacation so I hope that his recovery goes well so that I can return to work after the break and not have to take any more time off this year. In addition to worrying about Isaac I do worry about my kids at school. They have had and will continue to have some great substitutes in the room, so at least the time is productive.

He ran to me!!!

This little cutie pie was standing at the end of the hall and I was so excited that he was standing on his own so far away from any objects that I got excited and decided to try to take a picture. The next thing I know, he's running down the hall towards me and I barely got the shot before he was too close! So, what's a Mommy to do? I got Daddy to carry him down the hall so that I could try to get a picture of it the second time. Actually the picture of him walking on the right was take 5 or 6. :o) I am so excited that our little man is starting to walk. He actually had to walk about 10 steps to make it all the way to me. This is a record! I think our old record was 4 steps! Way to go Isaac!!!! Mommy & Daddy are SO excited!!

So Much to Be Thankful For

Wow! A lot has happened since Thanksgiving 2007. Last year if you had told me that by this Thanksgiving I would be a mother, I would have smiled politely and then gone home and cried over your insensitive comments. My prayers are with the other families out there who are still waiting to bring their children home. Our documents were LID (logged into China's system) on August 30, 2006. Currently CCAA has matched families with an LID through February 17, 2006. There are many families waiting to come together during this time and my prayers are with you all.

We returned home to Orlando on October 23rd and I can't believe that we've now been home for over a month! Isaac is doing very well and is learning English. (Well you know, he can't talk, but he can do what we ask him to. - He can put his toys away and he can give hugs and slobbery kisses.)

I never imagined that I would have a son. When we decided upon China as our adoption destination, I pretty much knew that I would have a daughter since 90% of the children adopted from China are girls. I still hoped that one day I might be able to adopt a boy, but in my heart I knew that he wouldn't be the big brother. Isaac is such a snuggle bug! He loves his Mommy, but if I'm not around he is content to hug other people. Today I took second place to Daddy which was good! :o)

We went to Mom & Dad's for Thanksgiving dinner. It was a small affair this year as my brother's daughter Zoe was in New York with her other Grandma. It was our family, Mom & Dad, Joseph, and our friend Lily. I'm used to huge dinners for Thanksgiving. When I was little we frequently had over 15 at our dinner and I was a permanent resident of the children's table. After dinner Isaac crawled into the kitchen to make sure that the dishwasher was loaded properly. He had fun playing with the silverware while Grandma loaded it.
On Monday I'll return to my students at Freedom Middle School. I'm going to do a presentation for them on our trip to China. I hope that it will be a nice way to ease back into working after being focused on Isaac for the past seven weeks. Isaac will stay home with Daddy for a while. Daddy is looking for a job after being laid off. Please pray that Craig will have favor as he sends out his resumes and that God will provide a job that meets our needs. Once Craig finds a job Isaac will stay with my best friend Wendy while we are at work. Isaac loves Wendy and her children so we can't wait until he gets to be at her house every day.

Time Flies When You're Having Fun!

I can't believe that we've been home with Isaac for one month already! He's gaining weight and growing like a weed! He has now outgrown some outfits that were a little big when we met him in mid-October. A pair of pants that hung from his hips and looked incredibly baggy now fits quite well and I imagine only has a few more weeks of wear left.

Dr. Ruiz scheduled Isaac's surgery for December 15th. I am so excited because now I'll only have to miss one more week of school because his recovery will coincide with Christmas vacation. Please keep us in prayer as we head into surgery. Isaac has been battling ear infections since we returned home and has had a cough from time to time. If he is sick I don't think that he'll be able to go in for surgery. As you can see in the picture our little man is a fan of thumb sucking and tends to do so as he drifts off to sleep and when he is stressed out. We are worried about how he will be able to soothe himself once he has had his surgery. A thumb or stray toy in the mouth could undo all of Dr. Ruiz's work so he'll probably be wearing "no-nos" for a while which will prevent him from putting his hands and toys into his mouth.

Yesterday we went to the Magic Kingdom with Grandma and my friend Anneke and her children. I had always said that I would not take my children to Disney until they were 10 years old, but I must say that we had an enjoyable day. Isaac slept through his first ride because the line for Dumbo went too slowly and we just didn't want to wake him. He enjoyed the up & down of Winnie the Pooh's Adventure and really liked looking at the children in Small World.

I've been busy!

Let's see, we've been pretty busy in the Stopyra household. I don't know how I'm ever going to adjust to working AND being a Mommy, but alas if we want to keep our house and continue to eat, Mommy will go back to school on December 1st. So here is a brief review of what we've been doing for the past week when we haven't been at the doctor's office...

On Friday Isaac got to see Daddy play softball. Can you see Daddy out in right field? He made an awesome play from out there!
On Saturday Isaac got to meet Nana & Big Gramps in De Land. Isaac charmed them with his sunny personality!

The weekend was busy and we got to meet Aunt Hubba and Uncle Tom when they came in to Orlando on Sunday! Who knew that so many people could love one little boy so much? We'll call this my first birthday celebration! Today I am 15 months old. Lots of people came over for lunch and then I got to go into the hot tub.
November is national adoption month so Mommy and Daddy told everyone how wonderful I was at the Discovery Adoption Network on Monday night. The whole family wore shirts to honor my time in China. There were several families there to celebrate the miracle of adoption. Some families were still waiting to bring their children home and other families had already returned home with their children. It was fun to be around so many people that know how wonderful adoption is!

On Wednesday we got to meet Dr. Ruiz who is going to do my cleft palat surgery. Dr. Ruiz said that my palat looked good and that things should go very well for my surgery. We may even be able to have it done as early December 15th. Please pray that God would show Mommy, Daddy, and Dr. Ruiz the best time for me to have the surgery. We don't want to rush if it isn't the best thing for me.

After meeting with Dr. Ruiz I learned how fun it can be to feed Pepper from my high chair.

Yeah!

Yeah! I don't have anything metal in my ear! However, I did have a large amount of dried blood in my left ear. It was a crazy experience at the doctor's office. They had to wrap the poor little guy up like a papoose and strap him to the table so that he didn't jerk around and cause more damage as they were looking into his ears.
The doctor had to irrigate his ears with warm water to clear up built up wax and a large amount of dried blood. He screamed and screamed and I felt so bad! After she irrigated his ear she used tweezers and pulled out a rather large piece of dried blood. It was probably the size of this lower case "o."

He has to go back in two weeks to double check to see if his ear drum ruptured and is draining. They are going to do an ear test and make sure his hearing is ok. I have to irrigate his ears twice a day to make sure that they continue to drain right so that he can heal properly.
This is a busy week! Tonight our church is hosting a National Adoption Month meeting and Craig and I will be talking about our adoption journey. I'm going to try to get someone to take a picture for us so that we can post it.

More updates to come.

When the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing...

Today we had to go back to visit Dr. Fields. Isaac had a rough night and kept waking up. I wasn't sure if he was having bad dreams or if his ears were still bothering him. He's now been on antibiotics for his ear infections for 7 days. He was pulling on his ears some and has developed a cough. So... back to the doctor we go!

All About Kids Pediatrics is WONDERFUL! I called to see if his problem was normal, after all what do I know as a first time Mommy? I told them that he's still pulling on his ears and that now he purrs like a kitten. I called at 9:45 and they got me in at 10:40.

When Dr. Fields looked into his ears to check them she noticed something very odd in his left ear. She saw something metallic!!!! She tried to get him in with an ENT today, but all of the pediatric ENTs closed at noon or were in surgery this afternoon so we will go to Nemours in Lake Mary Monday afternoon. She can't figure out how something metal ended up in his ear and wondered if perhaps China uses a metallic ear tube for some reason... Who knows? Anyways, we still have ear infections and have 3 more days of antibiotics. We'll finish up in time to go to the ENT and they can prescribe more medication if we need it.

Oh Joy! (Please note the sarcasm. We'll get on to this later in the story.)

On to the purring like a kitten...

No, it isn't good when your child purrs because after all they are human and not feline in nature. She listened to his lungs for a while. Then a nurse came in with an albuteral treatment with a nebulizer. Currently we are working on 4 hours waiting for our nebulizer to be delivered and can expect it (we hope this is a better window than the cable guy) within an hour & a half. We are to give him a breathing treatment every 4 hours! Poor little guy.

As if our day wasn't exciting enough we got to go to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women & Children for a chest X-Ray. They were pretty good and we were in and out in just under one hour. I just heard back from the doctor's office and his lungs are clear and they say that it's a viral infection and not something that needs to be treated with antibiotics.

So, Isaac is now on Mommy's insurance plan and that is wonderful since we had to go back to the doctor AND to the hospital. BUT as we were pulling up to the hospital to park the pharmacist called and the prescription part of the insurance is not in effect yet. WHAT!?!?!?! So in between going to the doctor and hospital I have made countless phone calls to the insurance company, the prescription company, my employee relations insurance office (only to discover that their computers are down for upgrade until Monday morning!) only to end back up at the pharmacy where I had the joy of paying $62.99 for another prescription!

I don't understand why he's in my regular insurance, but for some reason the communication system broke down before he got added into the prescription area. So, for last weeks prescription I get to file a claim with the insurance company, (I'll probably get reimbursed in time to help him get a gallon of gas for his first car) and if the insurance companies clear things up Monday or Tuesday the pharmacy can get a refund for me. That would be wonderful because so far I've paid an extra $96 for his prescriptions not to mention the refund we're waiting on for the doctor's office.

With all of this Isaac is a real trouper. Please keep us in prayers because next week we have three doctor appointments. We'll meet with the ENT on Monday afternoon, the Cleft surgeon Wednesday morning, and a recheck with his pediatrician on Wednesday afternoon. Sometime we need to fit in his physical to make sure he's ok and get him tested and started on his immunizations to make sure he is up to date.

On a happy note we now have 3 new teeth! One top tooth and two molars! Now we just have to agree to allow Mommy to brush our teeth so that they don't get icky!

Two weeks already!?

I can't believe that we've been home for two weeks already! When Isaac first joined our family he could walk if we were holding his hands. After he'd been with us for 6 days he was walking along the edge of the bed in our hotel room. Now he's having a ball using the walker that Aunt Wendy gave him. Since he started practicing with the walker he has even tried a few steps all on his own a time or two. He usually gets to two steps and falls down, but he keeps on trying. He even tried to let go of one of our hands and try walking with one hand held, but tipped like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. He is quite a determined little guy and I'm sure we'll see our little man walking around the house on his own in no time!

On Friday before we tried to go Trick-or-Treating we had our first visit with Dr. Fields and discovered part of Isaac's discomfort was a double ear infection. He absolutely hates to take his medication, but Daddy & Mommy are learning to be creative and are getting the medicine into him! He must be feeling better because his appetite has returned and he is back on track to eating us out of house & home! I know we'll be in big trouble when he is a teenager at the rate he's eating now!

On Halloween we got dressed to go Trick-or-Treating, with our favorite cousin Zoe but decided it was too cold to go out with an ear infection. So instead we had fun prowling around the house as a very cute lion.

It is simply amazing how a child fills your day with love and excitement. In addition to our doctor visit we have had the opportunity to meet lots of new people. We've gone to the nursery twice at church, we went to Mommy & Me once, we have had Natalie come over to visit and we have gone to visit Anthony & Kyra, and Ethan & Olivia. We've been so busy meeting new people!

Yesterday Isaac threw his arms around my neck and gave me the biggest hug ever! Little kid hugs are always the greatest, but I think on a scale of 1 to 10 this one was a 25! It he smiled and flunng his little arms around my neck and squeezed tightly!

Isaac's vocabulary is growing. Of course due to his severe cleft palat he is not able to actually say the words, but he knows "Mommy", "Daddy", "eat", "Pepper", and most of the time he knows "no." He looks around for the person we are talking about and when I asked where Daddy was the other morning he got a big smile as soon as I said the word Daddy and started looking around to find him.

Below are some pictures from our picnic with Aunt Tina, Uncle Sean, Ethan, and Olivia at Holden Park.

I've been busy

Wow! Life in Orlando is very interesting. Everyday I get to experience new things. Yesterday I went to church for the first time and had a lot of fun in the nursery. I thought it was odd that so many big people kept coming into the nursery when most of the people in the room were babies like me. Mommy and Daddy told me that they came in to visit me because they have all been praying for me to join the family and have a good adjustment period with my family.

Mommy was so eager to get to church that she forgot her camera! I know I am as shocked as you are that she forgot to bring it because I think she's a professional photographer, she always has a camera aimed at me! She was so sad because she missed my first church experience and then my play time with my friend Ethan. I had so much fun playing at Ethan's house because he's a big boy and he shared his toys with me. Ethan also taught me how to clean up after I make a mess.

Today Mommy and Daddy took me to the pumpkin patch with Aunt Wendy and the kids that I will be playing with when Mommy goes back to work. The people at the pumpkin patch even knew who I was because Mommy won the Family Name Game on Z88.3 this morning. They asked Mommy if I was the Isaac that they talked about on the radio. Mommy was so excited about it, I think she was about to cry when they asked her if she had a son named Isaac. Mommy told the people lots of really nice things about me and how I came to join my family.

After the pumpkin patch we stopped by the church so that the people Daddy used to work with could meet me. It was so much fun, because I got lots of big people to come down on the floor to play with me. I didn't know that so many people have been praying for me and hoping that things would go well when I moved to Orlando.

After my nap and dinner Grandma and Grandpa came by to visit. I'm starting to warm up to Grandpa. I wasn't too sure about him because of his mustache and because I've never really known a lot of men before I met Daddy. Tonight Grandpa and I played with my toys and my doggie.

After Grandpa left I splashed around in the bath-tub and watched Baby Einstein. That is a very cool video and I really like Mozart. I was so tired from my busy day that I feel asleep around 9:00 and Mommy hopes that I still sleep until around 6:00.

I have a pet doggie

After more than 24 hours in airports and in the air we are now home in Orlando! Isaac had a great trip home and slept for most of the 12 hour flight from Guangzhou to Los Angeles. On International flights the bulkhead row has a bassinet where babies can sleep. Thank you to everyone who joined us in prayer as we prayed that we could get this seat. When we checked in the airline told us that the seat was not available, but when we found our seats on the plane we discovered that we were in the row with the bassinet, but we had to change seats with the gentlemen from Mexico who were assigned the seat where the bassinet could be fastened to the wall. I'm sure part of the reason he slept so well was because he could be in the bassinet, and the other reason is because we left at his normal bedtime.

Our arrival in LA was less eventful than I anticipated. I really wanted to take pictures as we went through immigration, but we weren't allowed to. We went through the first line where they checked our passports and then we had to go into another line for immigrants. Luckily they took

families with adopted children ahead of the other people waiting in line. We were through immigration before our luggage came off of the plane, poor Lynne was waiting & waiting for our bags and I finally joined her to help pull them off of the belt. After we had our bags we had to go through customs and they could have searched our bags, but we were lucky. However in Guangzhou the airline said that our final destination was Charlotte (it was only a layover before we got to Orlando) so instead of putting our bags into a special area for families who are continuing to fly, we had to take all of our luggage from the end of the 4th terminal all the way to the 1st terminal to check in for our domestic flights and recheck our bags through to Orlando. If I hadn't caught this error our bags would probably still be waiting for us in Charlotte!

Our flight from LA to Charlotte was the most eventful because Isaac thought it was daytime, but everyone else on the flight thought it was a red-eye through and wanted to sleep. He was great for the first 3 1/2 hours, but the final hour or so was an event when he felt it was necessary to cry and fuss so that everyone knew how unhappy he was with these arrangements. Luckily whenever we were waiting at the airport he was a ham and made the people around us fall in love with him so they didn't try to throw us out at 37,000 feet! Our final flight was great because he was awake and so were most of the passengers. He made friends with the people around us and finally slept for most of the hour long flight. Finally at 9:05 we landed in Orlando! We were surprised when Grandma joined Aunt Wendy in meeting us at the airport!

After leaving the airport we went to Uncle Henry's for breakfast and Isaac had grits. He really likes grits so is a real southern boy! Mommy, Daddy, and Aunt Lynne were so out of it that they could hardly eat their food, but Isaac ate every last bite!
Finally we were home! Isaac loves his new room. He went straight for the toy area and started pulling down toys to play with. Here he is setting out to explore the rest of the house. He had a very eventful day. He got to meet several new people like Grandma & Aunt Wendy. Later on Grandpa and Uncle Sean came by to visit. He was a little afraid of them. I think it's because he's never seen facial hair before. Grandpa told Isaac that he has ice-cream at his house and that Grandpa knows that they'll be friends before long. With all of the excitement of the day Isaac didn't want to sleep much. He took a little nap for about 2 1/2 hours and then wanted to stay up.
Around 5:30 am Mommy couldn't take much more so she traded shifts with Daddy. Daddy played with Isaac for about an hour or two before he finally decided to go back to sleep! Mommy was so tired that she slept most of the day. She woke up and lost the camera so she needs to find it again and post more pictures.
Well I gotta run. Isaac is crying for attention! :o)

Going home!

Finally we get to leave for Orlando! Isaac is feeling much better and is a very busy baby. He is into everything! He loves to play with the stacking cups and bang them together. He also loves to play with his book that makes noise and had fun tearing up Mommy's "Parent's" magazine. He still has a little cough, but is doing much better.

This afternoon we'll go to the US Consulate for our swearing in ceremony and then we'll head straight to the airport to head home. We're happy that the plane leaves around the time Isaac normally goes to sleep and we hope that he'll sleep for most of the flight.

I wish that I could post pictures, but I'm using the hotel's business center and there is no way to post pictures. We miss you and wish that we had Dorothy's red shoes so that we could click our heals and be home already!

Update - sorry no pictures today

I'm sorry that I can't post pictures today. Our computer died on Friday and we haven't been able to get it to start up. The battery is dead and it won't even turn on with the electricity. Bummer!!!!!

Isaac is doing great! He is now walking along the edge of the bed going for different items of interest. When we first got him he couldn't do that, but he could walk if we were holding both of his hands. Last night he walked without assistance, just holding on to the bed. It was so exciting and we caught it on video. He keeps waking up at 2 am for a bottle, even though I try to get him nice and full before he goes to bed. Last night he only stayed up for about 30-45 minutes and went back to sleep until about 7:30 so that was nice. The night before he wanted to play from about 2 until almost 4, then he wanted to be up for the day at 6:30!

There were 7 families who asked if I could take a picture of their children when we went to Dongguan to visit the orphanage. I am thrilled to report that I was able to get some photos of all of your children!! The little boy who is with a foster family came with his ye-ye (grandpa) foster father. I was so happy that he was able to be there so that I could get pictures of him for you. Our facilitator/translator asked the director if we could have Isaac's baby blanket. All of the sudden she came up to me with his blanket and I started to cry. It is so wonderful to have this precious gift from his time at the orphanage.

Isaac has a little cold so when we arrived at the orphanage the director had a nanny wisk him off to see the doctor. The doctor gave him two injections and gave us some medication for him. He said that he had the beginnings of bronchitis so please pray that he continues to get well. We have to mix the powdered medicine in with his formula. He seems to be clearing up, but continues to have congestion in his lungs.

Over all Isaac is a happy little boy. He loves his mama and when we go out shopping often falls asleep in the arms of his baba. Yesterday we visited a Buddhist temple with over 500 Buddas inside. The name of the place we saw was the Ocean of Buddas. The smell of incense was so strong that it made my throat hurt, but I got some fantastic pictures of the temple, there were some beautiful paintings on the ceiling and everything was quite ornate. Xixi told us that when Chairman Mao came to power in 1949 that everything in the temple had been destroyed so that most of it has been restored.

We have a neighbor! There is a family from the Washington DC area that is in the room across the hall from ours. They have adopted a little boy who is 2 1/2 and he is quite adorable. It's really nice to have another family to visit with. Last night we joined them for dinner at Papa Johns. It was nice to have some American food. Their son, Dayton wasn't sure about the pizza, but he did seem to enjoy it. This morning we met them for breakfast and then we completed the paperwork that we need for the US Consulate on Tuesday. Xixi said that we might get to attend the swearing in ceremony Tuesday afternoon, if that happens we can leave a day early if there is still room on the Tuesday evening flight. If there is pray we can get the bulkhead, they have a baby-bed that they can attach to the wall. We'll be flying at night and it would be difficult to hold a sleeping baby for 12-15 hours depending upon headwind or tailwind.

We're going to shop with the Oglesby family in Shaiman (sp?) Island in a little while. We want to buy some more goodies. The sad thing is that since most of the children adopted from China are little girls so it is difficult to buy things that will be suitable for a little boy.

We miss you all. Hopefully we can get our computer to work again and I can post some pictures later.

Safari Time?

It’s a lot harder to write than I thought that it would be. I’m so used to being surrounded by computers all the time that are connected to the internet that I have come to take it for granted. In order to post anything, I must first take the computer out of the safe, find the adaptor so that I don’t short circuit the computer, plug it in, and try to be very quiet since everyone else in the room is still sleeping. It’s 6:14 am here in Guanzhou, but in Orlando it’s 6:14 pm on Thursday. I hope that you all have been having a great week.

Yesterday we went on a Safari. It takes a lot longer to get anywhere here because the roads are all one way. There is usually a huge barrier between the two lanes so you frequently have to drive past where you want to go, do a U-turn and drive back. It’s frustrating, especially on the way back when Isaac was hungry and didn’t want a cold bottle. He likes his food hot! He finally got so frustrated that he decided to take a cold bottle.

Back to the Safari, the best way to describe it is like Disney’s Animal Kingdom only better. I cost 150 Yuan, which for the people here is similar to a Disney ticket for us, but is only about $22 US dollars. They have lots of shows about the animals, but we just walked around and took a tram-like thing through the safari. There were so many animals and we got so close! I got some wonderful pictures of lions, hippos, pandas, bears (brown & black), tigers (white and gold), giraffes, wilder beasts, camels, and a lot of animals that I don’t remember the names of.

After the safari ride we were able to walk through lots of exhibits. Isaac and I got our picture taken with a white tiger cub. I got to feed the cub a bottle and we got several pictures. It was 30 Yuan (about $5). When we walked through the panda exhibit we were only about 6 feet away from these beautiful creatures! (I hope that I can figure out the web Picasso picture sharing thing so that you can see my pictures. I think you can search them by my name Gretchen Stopyra, but I’m not sure. I tried to get the Picasso album to post the other day and it didn’t work on this blog. So maybe you can search it apart from the blog because I have some awesome pictures of the animals from the safari.)

Today we will travel to Dongguan City to visit Isaac’s orphanage. There are over 8 million people in the city where he is from. The guides all have told his that his orphanage is the #3 orphanage in China and that it is very wealthy and that they even have a hospital where they are able to perform surgeries on the children. I also learned that China’s lottery system goes to support the orphanages. I am going to try to get a picture of how they do the lottery when I’m in the market. It’s really quite remarkable and I don’t know how anyone would ever know if they won anything.

Well the alarm is awake! Everyone’s day has begun. I hope that I can post more later on today after we visit Dongguan.

Tuesday in China

Yesterday we went back to the Civil Affairs office to complete our adoption on the Chinese side. It was very fast, but Xixi said that is because fewer families are here because of the Trade Fair. There was only one other family there to complete their adoption yesterday, the little girl was from the same orphanage as Isaac.

After our trip to Civil Affairs we went shopping with Xixi and another family from our agency. At the start of our trip we went to a department store to purchase some clothes for our little man. The department stores are very confusing. When you find something you want to purchase you show it to the sales woman, then she writes up a receipt that you take to the cashier so that you can pay for your item, finally you bring your stamped receipt back to the original sales lady and she gives you the items that you purchased.

After we left the department store we went to another mall/market. This place was probably 5 stories tall with a ton of stores. Most of the stores made a Claire’s boutique in our malls seem large! We went to a pearl market where they make the jewelry for you as you wait. Isaac and Ba-Ba had fun hanging out while the girls picked out some pretty things at the pearl market. I picked out some pearls and the lady strung them onto a necklace for me right there! It was pretty amazing.

Isaac loves the snuggly which is wonderful because he LOVES to be held. If we aren’t holding him, he isn’t happy. Which of course for now is wonderful and really helps with bonding, I am a little nervous about how to deal with that when we get home because Aunt Wendy will be too busy to hold him every second of the day once Ma-Ma returns to work.

I’m going out in a little while to take pictures of the regular street markets. You wouldn’t believe the way the streets are lined with lots of markets, actually it’s just like the movies.

Today Isaac had his first bath and he loved the water! Ma-Ma and Isaac played in the tub for a while and he didn’t seem to mind the experience.

Orphanage Tour on Friday

For those of you waiting to see if I can get a picture of your baby, I want to give you an update. We get to tour the orphanage on Friday. Our guide Xixi gave the director a list of the babies we are hopeing to see. I don't know if we'll get to see them all, but she spent a lot of time looking over the list that we gave her. I included your names and pictures of your babies. I hope that I can get pictures for everyone!

The picture is of the room where your baby will wait to meet you. In the background the director is looking at the list I gave her.

It's a BOY!

It’s finally here! We had lunch at a Chinese fast food restaurant that is downstairs from the hotel, and went back up to our room to prepare to meet Isaac. Craig and I were so nervous we could hardly eat, we should have shared our meal!

The ride to the Civil Affairs office was crazy, but I figured that God didn’t bring us all the way to China to adopt a little boy to have us die in an accident on the way there! The roads are narrow because we are staying in a city that has been a commercial center for Guangzhou for over 500 years. Cars are competing with pedestrians, bicycles, and carts. Even though it is very congested and appears disorderly there are no horns honking to alert people to get out of the way. I thought, “Surely if we don’t get into an accident, we will hit somebody!” At a couple of points Craig & I both had to cover our eyes. Lynne laughed, but I don’t know if she covered her eyes as well.

As we neared the Civil Affairs office the driver told Xixi that he saw the orphanages car. Xixi said, “Look! Over there! There is your son!” I looked and saw a beige car with blue writing on it and two women were getting out of the car with babies. There was Isaac only a few feet away from us!! The driver pulled into the street in front of the office and we got out as quickly as we could. The first time we came face to face with Isaac was in front of the Civil Affairs office with one of his favorite nannies holding him. It was so amazing.

We made it up to the 8th floor of the Civil Affairs office and had to wait quite a long time to actually meet our son. The director had to wait for the officials before we were allowed to hold him. We were able to see him in a special room for the children as he played with his nanny and we saw that he is trying hard to learn how to walk. He enjoys picking himself up and walking along the edge of various objects. While we waited an official came out into the waiting room and had us fill out a paper. We had to list our passport information and address.

Then Xixi had me begin to fill out paperwork that we will need tomorrow when we go back to the Civil Affairs office to complete our adoption. (Today we were allowed to take him to make sure that we want to keep him. What!??!! Of course we want to keep him!!!!) As I stared to fill out the paperwork they decided that we were able to meet our son, I the paperwork in mid-sentence and rushed to meet him. We had to dig out our passports so that the director could assure that we were the new parents. As I reached for Isaac the first thing he did was grab our passports!

It was so cute! It was almost as if he was saying, “All right! I’m ready! Let’s go home!” He never cried, but seemed to really enjoy us. After a few minutes I let the new ba-ba hold his son. It was so amazing to see Craig with Isaac. The nanny and director told us that he does not respond to his name, but that he does respond to what sounds like Er Zuh (Chinese for son). It’s dark in here and I don’t know where the paper where I wrote the actual words down are.

In the van on the way home Isaac enjoyed playing with his ba-ba. They don’t use car seats here and it was nice to take turns holding him. He seems to like us both, which is really good! When we got back to the room Xixi took Craig and Lynne out to search for formula and some other treats for the baby. Isaac and I stayed in the room and got to know each other better. He discovered the mirror and enjoyed playing with the other baby. He seems to be pretty with it and tried to look behind the mirror to find his playmate. As he played with the mirror he laughed and smiled a lot.

Xixi took the others to the same restaurant downstairs where we had eaten lunch to buy some steamed egg for Isaac to eat for dinner. So after 14 months Isaac had his first taste of fast food Chinese style. (It’s a restaurant named after Bruce Lee.) He loved the steamed egg and Xixi fed him most of his dinner. He is a very messy eater!

After the excitement of his day and with a full belly he fell asleep as Craig was holding him. It was so beautiful to see my handsome husband holding his son as he slept. It was so good to see this little boy so content. He feel asleep around 5:15 and Lynne & Xixi went out to dinner with another family from our agency. Craig and I stayed behind with Isaac to be together, then like good parents everywhere we went to bed around 6:00. We have heard to sleep when the baby sleeps because you never know when you will get to sleep. I couldn’t get back to sleep after I woke up at 11:00 so I decided to write this down and try to get this posted so our friends and family could see that we are now a family of three!

Isaac has been sleeping almost seven hours now. I’m not sure how much longer he’ll sleep so I’m going to post this so that I am ready once he wakes up. Thank you all for your prayers, keep them coming!!

Love,
Gretchen, Craig, & Isaac

What an exciting day!

What an exciting day, should I say days?! We had to be at the airport by 11:00 am on Friday and we landed in Guangzhou, China at 6:20 am on Sunday morning. We spent close to 24 hours in the air and almost 36 hours in various airplanes and airports. We made it through immigration in China very quickly; you wouldn’t believe how efficient it is. The baggage claim area was not only efficient, but quiet. The people were very orderly. They even had signs telling people to be quiet, but I don’t think it was necessary because every where we’ve gone, no matter how crowded it isn’t very loud.

Bob brought us to the hotel and we were able to check in early, about 8:00 am. Our room is quite large, we have a king size bed and a bathroom that is almost as big as Isaac’s bedroom at home! I’m glad that the White Swan was too expensive because Bob told us that we are getting a far better deal on our room because it is almost twice as big as the room we would have had to pay double for at the White Swan.

We got everything settled in our rooms and went downstairs for lunch. It was like no Chinese lunch buffet I have ever seen. Even the fried rice here is different! Lunch was good, but we won’t be eating many lunches here because it was over $20 for lunch and it wasn’t that spectacular. (Bob says he will take us out to experience other Chinese restaurants. We’ll try Cantonese, Hunan, and other types. Here if you want Chinese you need to decide which province you would like to experience because the types of food are very different.)

After a brief rest Bob came back and took us for a tour around the area of our hotel. We were unable to stay on Shaimin (sp?) Island because it is very expensive due to the trade fair, but it is better because Shaimin Island is similar to Epcot (my friend Melinda was right) and the area near us is downtown and filled with all sorts of cultural experiences.

As we were walking around we came to a meat market, except it didn’t look like a regular meat section like we are used to seeing at the grocery store. They had snakes, turtles, fish, and other things. The proprietor of the market will prepare the meat for you to take home, that way you have very fresh food. Bob told us that they do not understand why we buy our meat prepackaged, it’s too old, he told me. I told him that if I had to buy my meat the way they do here I would have to be a vegetarian. We both laughed at our differences.

As our tour ended Bob told us about a medicine shop. We were able to get an awesome back massage and foot massage that lasted almost 2 hours for about $12 US currency. It was so wonderful and I could go back again and again! We soaked our feet in wooden barrels with hot water and tea while they massaged all of the kinks out of our backs from the long flight, and once they were done we leaned back on comfy chairs while they rubbed our feet. Ahhhhhh… It was wonderful! Here is a picture of Craig's sister Lynne and Bob at the medicine shop as we waited to get our massage.

After Bob brought us back to the hotel we left to explore around the hotel on our own. We wanted a cheaper dinner where we knew what we’d be eating so we ended up at McDonald’s. It was two stories high and make the McDonald’s on International Drive seem not too crowded after all. They make the same meals, but add other vegetables as toppings instead of what we’re used to. As we walked around near our hotel we said it felt like we were at Times Square in New York City. They had a HUGE television where they were showing commercials and stuff, but it made the one at Times Square look tiny.

We have had so much fun. After our excursions last yesterday we came back to our room and slept for about 13 hours. We’re ready to go meet Isaac!

In about an hour or so Xixi (pronounced she-she) will come to our hotel room and we’ll get ready to go and meet Isaac. Our appointment is at 2:30 and we’ll leave our room around 2:00 to arrive at the Civil Affairs office. I’m so excited!!

Almost Time!

Tomorrow afternoon we begin our journey to Guangdong, China. On Monday morning (Sunday night US time) we will meet Isaac. He currently lives in Dongguan, but I'm not sure if we will travel to Dongguan to meet him or if he will travel to Guangdong to meet us.
Sometime later in the week we will visit his orphanage in Dongguan. We won't know when we are able to visit until we meet with our guide after we arrive in China. I hope to hug a few babies for some of my cyber-friends who I have met who are also adopting little ones from the CWI of Dongguan City. I am so thankful to Jen who was able to get some new pictures of our handsome little guy while she was in Dongguan earlier this month.
I'm almost done packing & Aunt Lynne (Craig's sister) is on her way to Orlando so that she can travel with us. We'll be staying at the Holiday Inn in Guangzhou, which I think is a little funny since we're traveling halfway around the world to stay in a Holiday Inn.
Hoping & praying that I can sleep tonight! :o)

New Pictures!

It takes a "real" man to wear pink. Thank you to Jen who was able to get a picture of Isaac while she was in China adopting her daughter Katie. He is hugging his nanny.
